Like magpies that collect bright objects to decorate their nests, many of us are all too attracted to (and distracted by) the Shiny New Thing. But once acquired, its shiny newness quickly wears off, and the momentary pleasure it provides gives way to feelings of disenchantment, until the glint of the next Shiny New Thing catches our eye.
